The Application Range of Powder Metallurgy Parts
Powder metallurgy parts are made with chemical, mechanical and physical properties that are hard to achieve through conventional melting and casting. The process can directly produce porous, semi-dense or fully dense materials and products — oil-impregnated bearings, gears, cams, guide rods and tool cutters — in what is effectively a chipless process.
PM parts apply mainly to automotive, equipment manufacturing, metal industries, instruments, hardware tools, and electronic and home appliances, together with the supporting raw material, auxiliary and sintering-equipment supply chain. PM products include bearings, gears, cemented carbide tools, dies and friction materials.
In recent years this has become a substantial market; roughly half of automotive components are made by this type of process.
Typical application sectors: automotive and motorcycle, textile machinery, industrial sewing machines, power tools, hardware tools and electrical/engineering machinery.
Material classification: porous materials, anti-friction materials, friction materials, structural parts, tool-and-die materials, plus magnetic and high-temperature materials.
Because the technology forms parts from metal powder and sinters them — similar to ceramic production — it can also be used to prepare ceramic materials.
