Sintering

Sintering heats a powder compact to just below its melting point so that particles bond through diffusion, giving the part strength and structural integrity. It is the key step that turns a pressed powder part into a usable component.

How the process works

  • Green compacts are heated in a controlled atmosphere furnace.
  • Particles bond by diffusion at the high temperature without melting completely.
  • Density, strength and porosity are influenced by sintering temperature, time and atmosphere.

When it is used

  • All structural powder metallurgy parts
  • Parts needing controlled porosity, e.g. oil-impregnated bearings
  • Parts requiring strength beyond the green state

Suitable geometry

  • Any geometry that has been pressed to green form

Secondary operations

  • Sizing
  • Machining
  • Oil impregnation

Typical applications

  • Automotive components
  • Bearings
  • Gears
  • Structural parts

Advantages

  • Imparts final strength
  • Controls porosity for self-lubricating bearings
  • Uniform treatment across large batches

Limitations

  • Requires controlled atmosphere and furnaces
  • High temperatures and tooling constraints
  • Longer processing time versus pressing alone

Sintered Bushings

Sintered bushings and oil-impregnated bearings are pressed from metal powder and sintered with a controlled porous structure that can hold lubricating oil. They provide a self-lubricating, cost-efficient bearing solution for high-volume rotating and sliding applications.
