Powder Compaction

Powder compaction presses metal powder in a shaped die into a green compact. It is the shaping step in powder metallurgy and determines part geometry, density and many final properties.

How the process works

  • Precisely weighed powder is fed into a die cavity.
  • Upper and lower punches compress the powder to the required green density.
  • Part features perpendicular to the pressing direction are net-shaped; side features usually require tooling complexity or secondary operations.

When it is used

  • Net-shaped geometries that can be pressed axially
  • High-volume production with repeatable dimensions
  • Parts where density distribution must be managed by tooling design

Suitable geometry

  • Gears and toothed rings
  • Flanged bushings
  • Structural blocks and brackets
  • Attention to pressing-direction features

Secondary operations

  • Sintering always follows
  • Sizing
  • Secondary machining
