Powder Metallurgy Capabilities

Process capability pages explain what each step does, when it is used and what materials and geometry it supports. Company-specific equipment ranges are confirmed per project.

Powder metallurgy production in progress

Powder Metallurgy

Powder metallurgy is a manufacturing process in which metal powder is compacted into a shaped die and then sintered under controlled conditions to bond the particles. The process produces near-net-shape parts efficiently for high-volume production.

Powder Compaction

Powder compaction presses metal powder in a shaped die into a green compact. It is the shaping step in powder metallurgy and determines part geometry, density and many final properties.

Sintering

Sintering heats a powder compact to just below its melting point so that particles bond through diffusion, giving the part strength and structural integrity. It is the key step that turns a pressed powder part into a usable component.

Sizing

Sizing is a secondary pressing of a sintered part inside a sizing die to improve dimensional accuracy and surface finish. It is used when pressed-and-sintered tolerances are not tight enough for the application.

Secondary CNC Machining

Secondary CNC machining is applied to powder metallurgy parts for features that cannot be produced net-shape in the die, such as cross holes, tight tolerances and undercuts. Combining PM near-net-shape with targeted machining can reduce overall cost.

Custom Tooling & Die Design

Custom tooling is the shaped die set used to press a specific powder metallurgy part. Die design requires a full review of the part drawing so the final geometry, density and dimensions are achievable before the tool is built.
