Secondary CNC Machining

Secondary CNC machining is applied to powder metallurgy parts for features that cannot be produced net-shape in the die, such as cross holes, tight tolerances and undercuts. Combining PM near-net-shape with targeted machining can reduce overall cost.

How the process works

  • After sintering and sizing, a CNC operation machines critical faces, holes or threads.
  • Machining is selective, applied only where net-shape pressing cannot meet the requirement.
  • This is a finishing step that complements powder metallurgy rather than replacing it.

When it is used

  • Cross holes, undercuts and side features
  • Very tight tolerances beyond the sintered process
  • Threads and specialized geometry

Suitable geometry

  • Cross-drilled features
  • Precision bores
  • Threaded regions
  • Mating faces

Secondary operations

  • Deburring
  • Cleaning and inspection

Typical applications

  • Automotive valve bodies
  • Lock mechanisms
  • Precision housings

Advantages

  • Provides features outside die capability
  • Achieves tolerance levels required by design
  • Keeps most of the part in low-cost net-shape

Limitations

  • Increases cost per part versus fully net-shape production
  • Machining considerations for PM materials (porosity)
